From Desire to Action: A Spiritual Reflection

During a time when my youngest daughter, Kamryn, and I were sick, I made plans for her and I to get some rest after I sent my older two kids off to school.

Before I got back into bed, I went ahead and her some go-gurts to snack on so that I wouldn’t have to get up from my rest.

I put them in the mini fridge that’s in my bedroom and then got into bed.

Some time after going to sleep, she woke up and said, “Mommy, I hungry.”

I told her to go and grab her yogurt from the fridge.

She didn’t respond nor did she move.

She fell asleep. So, I went back to sleep.

She did this a total of 3 times.

I thought to myself that if she was really hungry, she’d get up and go get the food.

This moment brought about a revelation that resulted in me comparing Kamryn’s actions with people (including myself) that says “I want this or that“, but whose actions are opposite.

Sayings like,

“I want to eat healthy and lose weight..”

“I want to be healed..”

“I want to be free in my mind..”

“I want to be more like Jesus and less like the world..” and so forth are all things people commonly say but ends up doing another.

This is a call for us to take a moment to reflect and examine a few things like,

What do I want?

What am I doing to prove that I want “it”?

What am I not doing that Ishould be doing?

Most times, the things that we want (or desire) are things that God has given us the desire for.

Therefore, if the desire comes from Him, then we should want it so much so, that we are willing to get up and get it.

Someone who is intensely hungry or thirsty will do what they need to do for food and drink.

Having a desire for something isn’t enough going to bring about what we want.

In the same way, God wants us to not only desire the things of Him, but to also go after what He has prepared in advance for us – by faith!

“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

Philippians 2:13 NIV
