Examining Influence: How Our Surroundings Shape Us

On one particular day, my youngest daughter Kamryn, came home from daycare making a strange noise.

I wasn’t looking at her when she first started making the noise, but as she continued to make the noise, I then began to observe her.

She was renacting someone that had hiccups.

It was evident that she witnessed someone at the daycare doing it.

Though it tickled her father and I, we both came to the conclusion that she learned this action from someone else.

She was at daycare only for a few hours.

Then, I got to thinking…

What behaviors or words are we quickly picking up from others – whether we’ve been around them for hours, days, or years?

Are we mindful of the company we keep around?

Are we taking time to examine why we do or say certain things? Because more than likely, we’ve repeated things that other people have done.

Are the behaviors or words we’ve picked up from other people pleasing and honoring to God?

If we’re not sure, we have the Bible to examine and test our thoughts, words, and behaviors to see what we need to put down and what is acceptable to God – for not all behaviors are bad, especially if it geninuely brings us closer to the Father.

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.
