Recently, I found myself getting really annoyed with the number of times my daughter came to me to ask for permission to do literally everything.
“Mommy, can I use the potty?” (While standing right by the bathroom)
“Mommy, can I get a blanket?”(While sitting right next to one, and sometimes already holding one)
“Mommy, can I sit on the couch?” (While standing right up against it and pointing to it)
“Mommy, can I go to my room?” (While she has the free will to go anytime she gets ready to)
…. And the questions continued.
Then I heard a soft whisper asking me, “Why does it bother you that she values your answer? If she did not ask you and then did anything she wanted, how high do you think the chances would be to find trouble or harm to herself?”
Then, my perspective changed.
The moment with my child revealed how important it is for us to go to the Father for everything that concerns us.
There is nothing too big or too small that He isn’t concerned about.
It is always better to seek His ways.. His Kingdom.. His answers.. and His righteousness rather than our own knowledge.
Though a thought or idea may “seem” safe and good from our perspective, it could look otherwise from God’s perspective.
The smallest decision we keep God out of could eventually result in the biggest mess of our lives.
Our ways and thoughts can never mount up to God’s ways and thoughts. So because His ways and thoughts are higher and wiser than ours, we can never be sure that our ways and thoughts can overrule His.
One important thing to keep in mind each time we do make the effort to inquire God about a decision is that we can never irritate or annoy Him. We can never ask too many questions. He longs to be stitched into every detail of our lives.
This moment revealed a level of impatience that was hidden in my heart, but I thank God for allowing His patience with me to chase out that impatience.
Now, I see it as an honor for all my children to come to me for the right answer. This helps me to believe that as long as they do, and as long as I desire good for them, they’ll never be lead astray by my knowledge, insight and instruction. This’ll allow them to really live the good life because of the wise counsel they yielded to.
‘”Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
