Weight On God

In a corner of my home office lies different weights that I use for workouts.

My 2 year old daughter, Kamryn, walked in and attempted to pick up a 10 pound weighted ball. After a couple of failed attempts, she gave up and moved on to something else that she was able to handle.

God used this moment to exemplify the power that we do not have versus the power that only He has.

The 10 pound weight symbolizes the things and situations in life that we attempt to carry when the truth is, it’s not our weight to carry. It is only meant for God to handle – in the same way I was the only one that could handle the 10 pound weight.

Religion says that a person is “weak” if they are not able to handle the heavy things in life, but relationship with the Fathers says that a person is “strong” in heart and mind when they depend on God and His supernatural power.

When we attempt to pick up or carry heavy weights, we cause unnecessary strain, pain and injury onto ourselves.

It is important to understand who we are and our place, and to also understand who God is, His power, and place in our lives. When we accept and understand that we are mere humans, we will also understand that we are never meant to take on the capacity that only God can take. This keeps us grounded in our places by only carrying the things that we can handle, and trusting God to take care of what we cannot handle or manage.

God’s power extends beyond our natural abilities. This is why we can rest in His peace and abounding grace and strength.

He will never give us anything too heavy to carry because He is a fair and gracious Father.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
