At times, I will take my children and cruise around the city just to get out of the house for fresh air and a different scenery.
Sometimes, we may end up at a family member’s place, and other times we’ll go straight back home.
Recently, during one of our drives to my sister’s home, I noticed my son, Kyzer, was in the backseat giving me directions.
So, I followed his way.
At first, it seemed like we were actually getting somewhere.
But once we got to the busier streets with more lanes, more traffic, more lights and signs, he got quiet and sat confused.
Looking in my rear view mirror at him, I ask him the questions,
“Are you done giving me directions?”
“Do you know where we are?”
“Do you know how to navigate from here? “
He looked at me, huffed, and crossed his arms.
“Fine then,” I said. “I’ll continue being the driver because I know the directions AND the destination.”
Now Moms….
Isn’t this like us at times with God?
We sit in the back (or the passenger) seat and let Him begin driving, but then we start to feel like our directions is better, wiser, and will get us somewhere further.
And because we are set on going our way, He goes silent and allows it.
But here’s a kicker: He stays with us – even in our error!
Though, this isn’t something we should take lightly.
Instead, we ought to acknowledge that He is God and He is the driver that knows the beginning to the end.
He knows the destination we need to get to.
He knows the turns.
He knows how to overcome the speed bumps and roadblocks that are meant to slow us down and stop us.
He knows how to avoid the intersections, bypasses, and roads that have the most accidents because those are the very places that most people get to, become distracted, and ended up clashing.
But in order to get to the destination safe and sound, it is imperative that we allow Him to be God.
We are a passenger for a reason. Life was never meant for us to give God directions. It was meant for us to be silent and trust God – even when we cannot see what’s around the corner.
He knows the way.
He IS the Way.
A MOMent to Reflect:
Pride will not get us very far.
In fact, pride will always lead us to a bad situation or a hard fall (Proverbs 16:18-19).
In the very moment we humble ourselves, be still, and let God be god, He will be sure to direct our every path.
Our directions will lead us onto the broad road, whereas God’s directions will lead us onto the straight and narrow road.
And that is where we want to be.
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11
