Kamryn, my 1-year-old daughter, found it amusing to see her reflection in the mirror of my bedroom.
Each time she did this, she’d giggle and repeat her behavior.
As I watched her, I noticed that she’d stare at herself in the mirror for a few seconds, crawl away, and then come back to the mirror to stare at herself again.
I found it so cute that she was observing herself so closely, but it made me think of scripture in James 1:22-24 saying,
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”
I then began to reflect on my own life and identify the many moments that I knew the Word after hearing it, yet I didn’t do what it commanded me to do.
This meant that each time I did not do what the Word said, I missed the opportunity to honor, obey, and please God.
It is not a good thing to hear the Word, understand it, but not apply it to one’s own life.
Kamryn looking into the mirror was pure sweetness of joy, but as we see this moment from a different perspective, we can see that Father God doesn’t want us to be this way.
Verse 25 continues on by saying,
“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”
We were called to be obedient, free, and blessed…
…but this only happens when there is action done on our part.
A MOMent to Reflect:
When was the last time you took a good look at yourself in the mirror?
Do you see a woman that hears and have memorized the Word but haven’t yet applied it to her very own life?
Do you see a woman that is, possibly, talking action but can do much more?
Take a moment to pray and ask your Heavenly Father to meet you right where you are and give you the strength and motivation to do what you know to do.
He will do it because He’s a god of action.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8 NIV
Notice in this scripture, when action [asking, seeking, & knocking] is done, then God responds.
